STUART, VA — Olivia Jo, the Blue Ridge Mountains’ fast-rising bluegrass voice, continues to stake her claim as one of the genre’s most compelling new artists with the release of “Train to Nowhere,” the fourth single in an ongoing run of standout releases.
“Train to Nowhere” finds Olivia Jo blending modern bluegrass sensibilities with one of the genre’s most time-honored traditions: the train song. Here, the train becomes a literal vehicle of escape and a means of outrunning a life shadowed by regret and the desperate need to leave trouble behind. True to the dark, old-world roots that run through bluegrass and Appalachian folk music alike, the song follows a protagonist who is haunted by his past and, ultimately, forced to face it.
“There are plenty of bluegrass songs out there about trains, so when I started writing ‘Train to Nowhere,’ I knew I had to write something different than what has already been done.” she tells us. “I decided I wanted to take the song in an eerie direction. It is a bluegrass song after all — so I created a ghost story that could be told like a spooky Appalachian folk tale.
The story starts with a man running from his awful past with nowhere else to go, so he boards a mysterious train hoping to get far away from anything and anyone that reminds him of the things he wants to forget. On this train, he encounters the ghosts from his past — memories of the lives he took that he can’t escape no matter how hard he tries. By the end of the song, you realize that when you get on the Train to Nowhere, you can never get off. Now the man is trapped on this never-ending ride, forever tormented by his own shame and regret of the terrible things he has done.
The song is open to some deeper interpretation, though. What really happened to the man? Does he see actual ghosts on the train? Is all of this in his head, or is the Train to Nowhere a real ghost train for lost souls looking for a way out?”

ABOUT OLIVIA JO
Born and raised in Stuart, Virginia, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Olivia Jo is an up-and-coming bluegrass artist and versatile singer-songwriter. She grew up immersed in traditional bluegrass and country music, learning guitar from her father at age six and performing locally by nine. By twelve, she had recorded two bluegrass albums, appeared on radio and television, and was soon after featured in the PBS documentary Women in the Arts.
At sixteen, Olivia moved to Nashville, where she released her country album Something Real Good, featuring her own songs and co-writes with established writers. Over the years, she has honed her craft, collaborating with artists across genres and co-writing with names like Larry Cordle, John Pennell, and Tim Stafford.
In 2022, Olivia returned to her bluegrass roots with the single “You’ll Always Be My Blue Eyed Darling,” followed by charting releases “Mighty Mississippi” and “Nothing to Lose” (featuring Lou Reid). In 2024, she signed with ATS Records and released “High Sierras,” a Harley Allen-penned track featuring Rhonda Vincent. Her songs have landed on national charts including The Roots Music Report, Cashbox, and The Bluegrass Jamboree.
With her soulful voice, heartfelt delivery, and deep love for the music she grew up on, Olivia Jo is carving out her own space in bluegrass — bringing authenticity and fresh energy to every song she sings.
