Five Hundred Year Flood
Five Hundred Year Flood” was written by Adam Pope as a folk response to Hurricane Helene, echoing the tradition of songs that once “sang the news.” After posting it on TikTok, the song drew nearly half a million views. Adam was later asked to perform it in Asheville, NC at a vigil for Helene victims, just weeks after the flood. An interview article about that performance ran in the Mountain Xpress local newspaper.
Months later, Adam and his wife, Amy, recorded the track in Candler, NC at Van Atkins Studio, with Grammy-nominated artist Darin Aldridge producing and playing on it. This “Adam & Amy Pope” recording is now featured on loop in an ETSU art installation about Hurricane Helene in Johnson City, TN, titled Layered, Woven, and Pierced: The Appalachian Soul One Year On.
