Banjo maestro Tony Trischka today releases “Columbus Stockade Blues,” the fifth single from his highly-anticipated new album Earl Jam 2, out March 13. The storied folk-blues classic is transformed here by the Del McCoury Band, whose plaintive harmony vocals suffuse the track with melancholy and regret. As Trischka puts it: “Del and Ronnie McCoury’s vocal duo on the chorus is profoundly mournful — and though this isn’t technically a high lonesome tune, in their hands it becomes just that. Jason Carter’s fiddling is exquisite and Ronnie’s Monrovian solo is deep as the ocean.” Listen to the track HERE.
Hailed by The New York Times as “the father of modern bluegrass” and by NPR as “the great banjo liberationist,” Trischka has spent more than six decades redefining what the banjo can do while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. With Earl Jam 2, he continues an extraordinary mission: bringing to life previously unheard recordings of Earl Scruggs and John Hartford jamming at Scruggs’ home between 1987 and 1998.
Earl Jam 2 features fifteen newly recorded performances spanning traditional standards, deep-cut fiddle tunes, and iconic American songs. Trischka enlisted an extraordinary cast of collaborators for this project including Sam Bush, Dudley Connell, Sierra Ferrell, the Gibson
Brothers, Del and Ronnie McCoury, Bruce Molsky, Sister Sadie, the SteelDrivers, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and rising artist Farayi Malek.
On March 12, Tony Trischka will launch a residency at New York City’s Symphony Space. Over three consecutive Thursday evenings, he will be joined by musician friends including Tracy Bonham, Nora Brown, Michael Daves, Jared Engel, Béla Fleck, Brittany Haas, the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Farayi Malek, Steve Martin, Jerron Paxton, Martha Redbone, and Sean Trischka as they celebrate the banjo and perform some of their own selections as well. A full list of confirmed tour dates is below, and more will be announced in the coming weeks.
Joey Black of SiriusXM’s Bluegrass Junction sat down with Trischka for an in-depth interview and live acoustic session centered on his new album. The “Sidetracks” special will premiere on Friday, March 13 and will air multiple times throughout the following week.
