Butt Dial

By jkeel@larrykeel.com

Larry Keel and Peter Rowan’s friendship goes back 20 years or more, when they would see each other regularly at festivals and events involving each others’ respective bands. Savvy promoters have also curated specialty acts where Larry and Peter had the opportunity to collaborate and tour. Together they’ve played shows across America and have performed in Alaska, Hawaii and Jamaica, always taking in the local scenes and finding inspiration in the rich and unique cultures they experienced as musical colleagues and fellow travelers.

Over the years the friends would casually remark that they should hunker down and write songs together, and last year that finally happened. Through text messages, Larry and Peter would bounce around ideas and possible subjects to write about. At one point Peter had the idea about a funny story-song involving someone who unintentionally calls his friend in the middle of the night because he accidentally dialed the number when his phone was in his pocket (presumably, he sat on the screen to initiate the call). With the song’s premise in place, the writers then set out to tell the short, quirky and charming story of 2 friends who end up enjoying speaking on the phone for hours into the night, when they hadn’t even meant to connect.
“Butt Dial” was born!

“Butt dialing is one of those phenomena of the guess times we live in. Sometimes, you are listening to a soundtrack of a friend’s life, like entering into someone’s dream, you can only wonder what is going on ! In the song the butt dialing friends finally connect !

Writing with Larry Keel is like that, jumping into an unknown dream!”
– Peter Rowan

“I’d be honored to play on anything with Larry Keel, but the fact that this was a collaboration with Peter Rowan really sweetened the deal. And the fact that it’s about butts was really the cherry on top. It’s got that classic Keel vibe, and it was super fun to lay down some banjo on this one. Check it out, and don’t call me late for supper!”
