A Brand New Whippoorwill

By juniorsisk@va.net

Nashville, TN [February 25th, 2026] Turnberry Records is proud to announce the release of “A Brand New Whippoorwill,” the latest single from celebrated bluegrass traditionalist Junior Sisk. This song marks Sisk’s first new music following the highly successful release of his acclaimed album It’s All Fun and Games, and continues his tradition of delivering timeless, hard-hitting bluegrass rooted in mountain authenticity.  “A Brand NewWhippoorwill” is available NOW to radio via Get It Played.

Set against the backdrop of springtime renewal—redbuds blooming, creeks settling, and cool, still evenings—the song captures the lonesome cry of a whippoorwill and transforms it into a powerful metaphor for longing and remembrance. Written by David Coriell and Mark “Brink” Brinkman, “A Brand New Whippoorwill” features Sisk’s signature high-lonesome vocal that brings the lyrics to life.

“When I first heard this song, I knew it was written just for me,” says Sisk. “I’m an old country boy who spends most of my time in the mountains or on the lake when I’m not on the road. The whippoorwill is a very special bird for me—it’s so calming to hear one late in the evening. They’re not around like they used to be, so to hear one fire up just trips my trigger… like a newbluegrass singer singing a song like it should be sang!”

With imagery steeped in mountain tradition and poetic detail, “A Brand NewWhippoorwill” reflects Sisk’s lifelong devotion to authentic bluegrass storytelling. The song’s chorusHe’s still learnin’ how to fly, but man that boy can sing / He’s the newest member of our nighttime symphony”—paints a vivid portrait of Appalachian life, capturing both the beauty of the landscape and the ache of a lonesome heart.

Junior Sisk has earned widespread acclaim as one of bluegrass music’s most respected torchbearers, with multiple honors from IBMA and SPBGMA and a reputation for recordings that honor the genre’s roots while remaining fresh and compelling. “A Brand NewWhippoorwill” continues that legacy with classic bluegrass authenticity.
